Often mathematical, and occasionally artistic, my ideas have explored, among other things, how the air we breathe can deliver insulin into our bodies to treat diabetes, or spread infection in a pandemic, and how it can change what we eat, and why. Today, my ideas focus on the desiccation of the air we breathe by atmospheric climate change, and how the breathing aerosols of ions endogenous to the airways can help maintain human health.
David A. Edwards is a biophysicist, inventor, and pioneer of respiratory medicine. His research currently focuses on the discovery that human airways, along with other planetary ecosystems, are dehydrating with global warming, increasing risks of respiratory conditions, such as chronic cough, and cardiovascular conditions, such as hypertension, and the treatment of such conditions by reversal of mucosal collapse using compositions endogenous to human airways. Edwards is currently CEO and CSO of SC Therapeutics, in Phase 2 for the treatment of refractory chronic cough, founding director of the LIFT Institute, Honorary Scientist in the School of Medicine at Imperial College London, and Adjunct Professor of Medicine at Johns Hopkins University. Prior to joining his startup SC Therapeutics, Edwards was on the faculty of Engineering and Applied Sciences at Harvard University. He is the founder or cofounder of Advanced Inhalation Research (AIR), Pulmatrix, Medicine in Need (MEND), Le Laboratoire (Paris), Foodberry (formerly WikiCell), SC Therapeutics (formerly Sensory Cloud and Vapor Communications), and the LIFT Research Foundation. He is also the coauthor of two textbooks in applied mathematics, and the coauthor of several books of fiction and nonfiction, including Creating Things That Matter (2018 Holt), winner of a Nautilus Book Award in the category of creativity. Edwards is a member of the US National Academy of Engineering, the US National Academy of Inventors, and the French National Academy of Engineering (académie des technologies). He was made a Chevalier of arts and letter by the French Ministry of Culture in 2008.
